Once you’ve found your way to Oak Island, NC you are almost there. Yaupon Beach (pronounced yoh’-pahn) may be less known, but it is an infinitely cherished family friendly neighborhood. To both year-round residents and seasonal tourists who have found this gem of the coast, the area offers public beach access, restaurants, a fishing pier, several hotels and an “island-time” vibe you can feel with every passerby. It is adjacent to Long Beach, which extends to the west end of Oak Island.
In 1955, Yaupon Beach NC was incorporated into the town of Oak Island. In 1999, Long Beach was added as well. Today, the beaches of Oak Island include Caswell Beach, West Beach and Yaupon Beach.
The landmark centerpiece of the area is the Yaupon Pier. Originally built in 1955, then rebuilt in 1972 and again in 1992, it owns the bragging rights as the tallest pier in North Carolina.
The “beach” at Yaupon Beach is one pretty ten-mile stretch of southern facing, ocean coastline that offers ocean lovers a quiet surf with moderate tides. In addition, golfers of all skills and ability can tee it up while enjoying a beautiful view at an eighteen-hole course that is a short walk from the beach. Fishermen can choose from pier fishing, surf fishing, or head off the coast for some excellent deep-sea fishing. For the competitive fisherman, the area hosts the very popular King Mackerel Fishing Tournament every October.
As one might expect, many of local restaurants serve up some of the best seafood you can find on the coast. The Oak Island area is particularly well known for fresh, NC shrimp and blue crab. You can also find fresh seafood markets, specialty stores, shops and a grocery store.
A little more than 30 minutes away, you can visit Wilmington NC to the north and North Myrtle Beach, SC to the south. Yaupon Beach offers the remote, peaceful setting that many yearn for, but without being too far from the city. Not too far off are the Wilmington International Airport, the University of North Carolina Wilmington and Novant Hospital.
