Whether looking for a vacation home for the week or your next home for a lifetime, Sunset Beach, NC is an exceptional coastal town rich with history, natural beauty and a mellow lifestyle uniquely its own.
Sunset Beach, North Carolina’s southernmost barrier island, is located halfway between Myrtle Beach, SC and Wilmington, NC. It is close to the South Carolina state line and rubs sandy elbows with Calabash, NC and Ocean Isle Beach, NC.
The area was originally called Bald Beach. In 1955, the island was purchased and renamed by Mannon C. Gore. In honor of the sunsets on the island that he loved view, he opted for a more fitting moniker, Sunset Beach. Gore continued to buy property on the neighboring mainland for many years and Sunset Beach continued to grow. Three years after he purchased the island, he built an original pontoon swing bridge so that bicycles and vehicles could access it as well. This bridge provided the only non-water access to the 2.5-mile island until November 2010, when the 65-foot, high-rise Mannon C. Gore Bridge was unveiled.
Sunset Beach, NC, with its mellow vibes, has been a favorite coastal destination to families for generations. Love outdoor activities? You’re in the right place. Golf, fishing charters, and both motorized and nonmotorized sports enthusiasts are welcomed with open arms in this familyfriendly town. Over the past 15 years, the Town of Sunset Beach has continued to expand with the addition of the Sea Trail Plantation (and its three championship golf courses), as well as the Wyndfall and Cape Side golf communities
It is also part of the North Carolina Birding Trail, offering multiple locations to observe a unique variety of birds who call the Carolina Coast their home. The new Public Boat Ramp and fishing pier at Sunset Beach provide an easy launch space for boaters, kayakers and paddleboarders. You can also stroll an approximate milelong stretch of undeveloped coastline. For the occasional rainy day, head inland to the Ingram Planetarium for perpetually clear skies to gaze at.
Nowhere more than Sunset Beach illustrates why the Carolina Coast has gained a reputation as a premier coastal destination for those ready to retire, looking for a slower daily pace or ready for a permanent vacation spot. Sunset Beach and its surrounding areas offer many locally-owned and well-known shopping, dining and entertainment options that will help you feel right at home.
Considered part of Brunswick County Schools, K12 students will attend Jessie Mae Elementary School, Shallotte Middle School and West Brunswick High School. Upon graduation, students have their choice of several options for higher education, including the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Coastal Carolina Community College, Cape Fear Community College and more.
Sunset Beach is also fortunate enough to boast a low crime rate, with a remarkably low rate of violent crime compared to national and state averages.
