Located by the New River in Onslow County — south of Jacksonville, North Carolina and north of Wilmington, North Carolina — is Sneads Ferry, a quaint, nautical town imbued in history. Historic buildings intermingle with new subdivisions, shops and homes throughout, beckoning to the similarities of the Sneads Ferry of old and new. A traditional fishing town since the 1700s, Sneads Ferry is rapidly expanding due to its close proximity to Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, but not without continuing to honor the fishing industry originally responsible for its establishment, making for a lifestyle that truly embodies nautical life.
Sneads Ferry owes its namesake to the original proprietor of its ferry, Robert Snead, an attorney who settled in the area in 1791. Before the formation of the community, the area was referred to as Ennett’s Ferry, named after Edmund Ennett, who established the first ferry on the river in 1728. By 1759, Snead’s ferry operated on the opposite bank of the river, eventually earning the town its name.
Being located on the banks of the New River, Sneads Ferry offers various opportunities for watery ventures. Residents have their pick of fishing charters to choose from, or they can rent their own fishing skiff for boating in the river and sounds. Sneads Ferry also offers cabins and open campgrounds, perfect for those towing a trailer or travelling in an R.V.
The town is also home to a thriving community center, which is host to numerous activities, including the town’s annual Shrimp Festival, as well as an array of events, fundraisers, fishing tournaments, exercise classes and more. Additionally, the community center supports several charitable endeavors, such as the volunteer fire departments, Eagle Scout projects and numerous other charities and organizations.
Though Sneads Ferry possesses a tight knit, small-town feeling, it isn’t excluded from the perks of the coastal living reminiscent of bigger seaside cities. Neighboring towns and beaches include North Topsail Beach (9 minutes away), Surf City (21 minutes away) and Jacksonville (26 minutes away). While there are plenty of retail and dining options in town, including some locally acclaimed seafood restaurants, residents can take a short trip to the beaches and shops they love.
Being a part of Onslow County Schools, public, K-12 schools for children in Sneads Ferry include Dixon Elementary School, Dixon Middle School and Dixon High School. Sneads Ferry is also located an approximate 40 minutes from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and only 30 minutes from Coastal Carolina Community College, ensuring that graduates have some higher education opportunities that are close to home.
Sneads Ferry owes a large portion of its population and workforce to nearby Camp Lejeune. Between 2000 and 2014 alone, Sneads Ferry saw an 80 percent increase in population, largely due to the presence of military personnel and their families. Even with a sizable portion of residents being military employees, a large percentage of Sneads Ferry citizens are also employed in the hospitality and construction industries.
Considering that Sneads Ferry is rapidly expanding, and is predicted to continue doing so, there are plenty of housing opportunities throughout the area in new and pre-existing subdivisions. The majority of homes are considered single-family homes with three to four bedrooms and were built between 1970 and 1999 — though an increasing amount of homes have been built since 2000 to the present.
Sneads Ferry is an excellent community for families and, rest assured, Intracoastal Realty’s knowledgeable staff is here to help you find the ideal home you’ve been looking for.
