This gated community, located at the mouth of Virginia Creek, offers unmatched and unobstructed views of the Intracoastal Waterway, tidal marshes and beautiful Topsail Island, NC.
Homeowners in this Sloop Point enjoy a level of privacy that is difficult to find so close to the coast. Houses have been expertly crafted on lush rolling hills that maximize water views from every angle. Whether you are looking to purchase a custom home or be to secure one of the few remaining pristine home sites, a Sloop Point Plantation address is one that you will be proud to call your own.
The name of the neighborhood derived from an early port and shipyard serving “sloops” arriving from England, the Caribbean and other early American colonies.
Records show that in the late 1720’s colonial official John Baptista Ashe acquired a land grant including approximately 1,000 acres, which extend across what is today U.S. Hwy 17 to the Intracoastal Waterway.
As shown below, Sloop Point Plantation was constructed around 1726, making it the oldest surviving house in North Carolina.
The estate operated as a saltworks, providing an essential staple used for preserving meats.
Local legends surround the property, suggesting that pirates buried their treasure at Sloop Point. Sadly, to this day no such treasure has been found.
In 1989, a complete and careful restoration of the historic house was completed. The interior of the house still retains much of the colonial wood infrastructure. Today, the house is part of Poplar Grove Plantation, which offers tours and special events all year long.
Hampstead, NC, once a small town serving as a bedroom community for Wilmington, NC has become a residential hotspot all on its own. Interesting history, scenic views, an endless array of property options, friendly neighborhoods and close proximity to the beautiful Carolina coast draw more people year after year. In nearby Topsail Island, NC locals and vacationers enjoy less crowded beaches great for sunbathing, swimming, surfing and fishing. Area marinas are amply equipped to assist watersport enthusiasts with their leisure needs.
With a mild climate and beautiful beaches, newcomers of all ages are giving careful consideration to making Sloop Point their “forever home.” Residents are initially drawn to the area due to its affordable price points but then are quickly “sold” on the laid back coastal lifestyle that also is just minutes from all of the conveniences and attractions of the neighboring beaches, towns and historic sites. Excellent shopping and extensive employment opportunities can be found less than 30 minutes drive in either direction. With the Wilmington, NC metropolitan area to the south and with Jacksonville, NC (and USMC Camp Lejeune) to the north, you can enjoy the best of both worlds!
For families with school age children, residents have excellent choices in schools within the Pender County School District.
