Before December of 1940, Holly Ridge was a very small community with less than 50 residents. Then came a United States government contract to build Camp Davis, an army camp to be located in and around Holly Ridge. By 1943, the population exploded to around 110,000 — from 28. In its military heyday, Camp Davis could boast that it was the only post with seacoast and antiaircraft defense, in addition to a barrage balloon under one base command. In September of 1944, the Army’s operations were transferred to another base.
Soon after WWII came to an end, the U.S. Marines took over the use of Camp Davis for training purposes. Then, in June of 1946, the Navy moved in. The area became known as part of “Operation Bumblebee” — a covert, guidedmissile testing initiative. Camp Davis was closed in 1948, but the rich military history has become a part of the cultural fabric that still exists in Holly Ridge today.
