Homes for Sale Holden Beach NC

A Great Community to Call Home

Holden Beach is one of those coastal Carolina hidden gem communities that is not only a great place to plan a vacation but also offers exceptional value for a rental property investment or as the setting for your next home.
Holden Beach is a barrier island, located on the southern coast of North Carolina. With almost 11 miles of oceanfront, Holden Beach is the longest and the largest of the three islands in a group known as the South Brunswick Islands. It is bounded by Shallotte Inlet to the west, Lockwoods Folly Inlet to the east, and the Intracoastal Waterway to the north.
One road, North Carolina Highway 130, connects Holden Beach with the mainland. It rises 65 feet above the Intracoastal Waterway, giving visitors and homeowners a breathtaking view of the ocean. The beach and the ocean are the main attractions in this town, which prides itself on a restful, quiet lifestyle.
Along with heading out to the beautiful beaches, popular activities on the island include boating, surf fishing, kayaking, hiking and more. Holden Beach offers a fishing pier, and the island also happens to be a nesting beach for the endangered Loggerhead Sea Turtles.

A Brief History of Holden Beach NC

Before the American Revolution, early settlers who could pay 50 shillings per 100 acres of land could receive a permanent grant for Royal Governor Arthur Dobbs. In 1756, Benjamin Holden purchased four mainland tracts as well as the island between his plantation and the Atlantic Ocean. This island extended from Lockwood's Folly Inlet, west 6 miles to Bacon Inlet. Benjamin and his sons used the island primarily for fishing and cattle grazing.

The waters surrounding the island also contain interesting remnants of the area’s rich past. During the Civil War, Holden Beach and Lockwood's Folly Inlet became the marker for several shipwrecks including the Confederate blockade runners CSS Elizabeth and CSS Bendigo, as well as the Union blockade ship USS Iron Age. At low tide, visitors to the eastern end of the island can view the remains of the Iron Age.

In the 1920s, the Holden family began developing the resort community with a low density population and limited commercialism plan in mind.

Hurricane Hazel caused extensive destruction to Holden Beach in 1954 and rebuilding took many years to complete. The Island was incorporated on February 14, 1969. Seventeen years later, the Town of Holden Beach opened its high-rise steel and concrete bridge, which greatly improved beach access for the residents and visitors occupying the 1,900 homes on the beautiful island.

Holden Beach NC is Close to Everything

While there are limited commercial establishments on the island, the causeway leading to the island is lined with specialty stores, shops and a grocery store.

The Town of Shallotte, just 10 minutes, away offers several shopping centers, which include grocery stores and national chain department stores.

A little more than 30 minutes away you can visit Wilmington NC to the north and Myrtle Beach, SC to the south.
