Caswell Beach is a small, seaside village located on the eastern part of Oak Island in Brunswick County, North Carolina. Along with its unique, coastal beauty visitors and residents alike appreciate the slowerpaced, tranquil vibe that makes the area a hidden gem of the Carolina Coast.
Named after nearby Fort Caswell, Caswell Beach’s origins are immersed in history. In 1825, the Unites States government commissioned the building of Fort Caswell, mainly to repel pirates such as Blackbeard, who found refuge in neighboring Southport and Bald Head Island. At the time, Caswell island was still connected to the mainland by marshlands. Located at the mouth of the Cape Fear River, the fort quickly earned a reputation as one of the strongest forts in the world at the time. The fort was seized by the Confederate troops at the end of the 19th century and is now open to visitors.
The town of Caswell Beach was incorporated in 1975. It is home to the Oak Island Lighthouse, which was at one time known as the brightest lighthouse in the United States and the second brightest in the world, which was due to its adaptation of aircraft spotlights used during World War II.
While there are limited commercial establishments on the island, in adjacent Oak Island you can find specialty stores, shops and a grocery store.
A little more than 30 minutes away you can visit Wilmington NC to the north and North Myrtle Beach, SC to the south. Caswell Beach is close enough to major highways, airports, universities and medical facilities but secluded in its own nook, as to invoke a sense of remoteness.
Caswell Beach is also an outdoor activity lovers’ paradise. Residents and guests can take advantage of an abundance of premier golf courses, fishing charters, and kayak and canoe centers close to home. Plus, with the summer comes Loggerhead Sea Turtle hatchlings — so residents have the unique opportunity of observing (and protecting) the numerous turtle nests and their younglings as they make their midnight treks to the ocean.
Being part of Brunswick County Schools, K-12 students will most likely attend Southport Elementary, South Brunswick Middle and South Brunswick High. There are also several opportunities for higher education nearby with institutions such as the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Cape Fear Community College and Brunswick Community College.
Caswell Beach enjoys a low crime rate as well, one that is 37 percent lower than the national average and makes the area safer than 58 percent of the cities in the U.S.
