U.S. Highway 421 (Carolina Beach Road) in New Hanover County will be experiencing intermittent lane closures as the North Carolina Department of Transportation performs work on an 8.8-mile stretch of the highway.
Grading, paving and drainage improvements will be done from Snow’s Cut Bridge to just past George Anderson Drive. The road will also be widened and new traffic signals installed. The project began Monday and is expected to be completed by May 2017, with work occurring every day except major holidays and special events, weather permitting.
The highway is the main road to Pleasure Island and the beach towns of Carolina Beach and Kure Beach from Wilmington. Another route leading to Snow’s Cut Bridge, River Road, has been closed since September. Motorists should expect traffic delays in the heavily traveled area, which includes several schools and hundreds of businesses.
