The town of Belville, North Carolina offers residents and visitors a smalltown atmosphere with distinctive character. Belville borders the Brunswick River in Southeastern North Carolina and is located five miles from the Cape Fear River. Many consider Belville to be the ideal bedroom community of Wilmington NC, with a short drive averaging less than 10 minutes between the two locations.
Just before entering World War II, the production of Liberty Ships began near the Belville area on the East bank of the Cape Fear River at the North Carolina Shipbuilding Company as part of the government Emergency Shipbuilding Program. This manufacturing boom created many wellpaying jobs and drew new residents to the area during a time that was previously marked by strife as a result of the Great Depression. On December 6, 1941, the S.S. Zebulon B. Vance, named after the North Carolina governor from 18771879, became the first Liberty Ship launched into the Cape Fear River, mere hours before the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor.
The town was officially incorporated in 1977 and is now home to the 200acre Lincoln Industrial Park, in addition to a wide variety of businesses and charming neighborhoods.
