This quaint, island village is
only about six square miles in area and boasts a natural
environment free of cars. The island is only accessible
by ferry or boat. Many movies have been filmed on this
picturesque island such as Weekend at Bernie’s (1989)
and The Butcher’s Wife (1991). Bald Head Island is also
home to the famous lighthouse “Old Baldy” which is out
of service but still a great tourist stop. “Old Baldy”
is still the only “high-rise” on the island. The island
was originally a pirate hideout and later a bootlegger’s
hangout. Despite small shifts in the sand and ocean
patterns, Bald Head Island is still very much the same
as it was centuries ago.
Traffic on the island is obviously not an issue with only electric golf carts and bicycles being the most common modes of transportation. The ferry to Bald Head Island is a twenty minute trip and leaves from Southport, North Carolina. From Southport, Wilmington is about a 40 minute drive.
Subdivisions on Bald Head Island include Harbour
Village, Palm Court, Bald Head Island Hammocks,
Loggerhead Beach, Braemar, Middle Island, Keepers
Landing, Killegray Ridge, Floras Bluff and Lighthouse
Landing.
